Every day you and I use resources and produce waste. According to Campaign Earth, "Americans make up only 4% of the world's population, yet we consume nearly 26% of its resources." All of us need to think of ways to reduce what we consume. Simple steps can produce huge results. Here are some eco-friendly choices you can make.
Your Transportation
Tune up your vehicle
To get maximum fuel efficiency, your car requires regularly scheduled maintenance. Efficiency can be improved by up to 10 percent just by replacing air filters. Dirty oil increases engine friction so change it on a regular basis. Properly inflated tires will improve your gas mileage.
Purchase a fuel-efficient vehicle
The next time you purchase a new/used vehicle, think green. A green vehicle will get great gas mileage and will have alternative fuel capabilities. Reduce car trips by making a list and combining errands. Drive at or near the speed limit to reduce your fuel bills.
Use alternative transportation
When possible walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation. Each mile that you walk or bike saves 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. Getting rid of your car will save thousands of dollars each year on gas, maintenance and insurance and you will significantly reduce your "carbon footprint."
Consider taking local vacations
Traveling results in huge amounts of fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions. If possible, pick a vacation spot that can be easily reached by bus or train. If this won't work, drive your car or rent a hybrid. If you can't take land-based transportation, then take a plane. Flying is one of the most carbon-emissions-intensive activities you can undertake.
