Every day you and I use resources and produce waste. According to Campaign Earth, "Americans make up only 4% of the world's population, yet we consume nearly 26% of its resources." All of us need to think of ways to reduce what we consume. Simple steps can produce huge results. Here are some eco-friendly choices you can make.
Your Yard
Plant a tree
Trees provide wind and shade protection, saving money on heating and air conditioning bills while beautifying your landscape. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide. Fall is the best time to plant as temperatures are cooler, meaning less water will be needed.
Install native plantings
Native plants have adapted to local soils and climate and are more likely to thrive with less water, fertilizer and pesticides. Mulch your garden beds with an organic material to slow evaporation of ground moisture and to help lower soil temperatures.
Use nontoxic pesticides
Nontoxic pesticides are safer for humans and animals and they don't pollute our lakes and rivers. You can purchase them at the store, on-line or even make your own.
Water wisely
Water your lawn or garden early in the morning, if possible, so there is less evaporation. Drip irrigation systems or soaker hoses are efficient and easy to use. A rain barrel is a great way to collect water for both indoor and outdoor plants.
Compost yard and garden waste
Instead of buying fertilizer for the yard and garden, you can make your own. Just make or purchase a compost bin; add food scraps (no meat, oils or fats), leaves, grass clippings or weeds; add some water; stir now and then; and then wait a while. Soon you'll have what many call "black gold."
Plant a vegetable garden
Use the "black gold" produced above to grow your own produce in your back yard. This ensures fresh, affordable, pesticide-free vegetables for your family and friends.
